The gallery's collection focuses on the acquisitions from the Biennial Jacaranda Acquisitive Drawing Award (JADA). The JADA fosters Australian contemporary drawing practice, and as a result, the collection holds many fine examples of Australian drawings. It also includes the historical O'Grady watercolour collection of Australian flora and fauna. The collection includes works by regional artists, and artists from the local area and the Jacaranda Art Society gift (1967 - 1988). Other strengths include ceramics and prints.

Grafton is a graceful City on the banks of the great Clarence River . The town is noted for its fine street trees, particularly the spectacular jacarandas that carpet the streets with their mauve flowers at Jacaranda Festival time, in late October. The town lies at the heart of a rich agricultural area.
